questionable toning Term to describe the color on a coin that may not be original. After a coin is dipped or cleaned, any subsequent toning, whether acquired naturally or induced artificially, will look different than original toning.

Questionable Toning/Color - This was formerly referred to as ARTIFICIAL toning or color, but since there is so much controversy and subjectivity about this, the designation was changed.

"Environmental Damage" or "Questionable Toning" or "PVC" [See PVC]--or one of several other letdowns from the eagerly anticipated record-breaking grade--are typical reasons. The grading service keeps the grading fee. Naturally.
