Radiate Military Bust Left
Fashion of the late third century AD led to many different 'fancy' bust styles. Often the emperor was shown in his role as a military leader. Some listings include details rather than lumping all in the term 'military bust'.

The radiate crown on this coin of Gordian III, AD 238-244, indicates that this silver coin is an "antoninianus," (fondly called an "ant" or "radiate"), an extremely common denomination struck by numerous emperors from 215 to 294.

The unradiate head is retained during this period on the drachms and smaller coins. The inscr.

The other has a radiate Sol (sun) on obverse and a crescent moon and seven stars on reverse. The stars are the Septem Triones (Ursa major), a pun of the moneyer cognomen.

We are talking billions - 365 million silver radiates in one year. To put this in perspective, US mintage of dimes did not reach this quantity until 1962. In years when the Romans were waging major military campaigns, this number was greater.

In AD 295, the emperor Diocletian replaced radiates with a new copper-alloy coin. During the fourth century, the size and weight of this new coin was gradually reduced and smaller denominations were also struck.

The coinage of Britain from this period consists entirely of `barbarous radiates' so called because of their being crude copies of the antoninianus on which the emperor wears a radiate crown.

A silky smooth delight, bold cartwheel lustre radiates on warm honey gold surfaces. A splash of rose iridescence adds to the overall appeal. Struck from a slightly rotated reverse die (see below).

The design expresses these sentiments strongly: on the obverse, Miss Liberty wears a radiate crown, while on the reverse, 'PEACE' is proclaimed below the symbolic eagle, standing before a backdrop of glorious sun rays.

Caesar under his father, Tetricus II shared the radiate crown and so is commonly included in the lists of emperors. After the abdication of Tetricus I, his son also spent the rest of his days as a private citizen.

There were three types of quarter ryal, with a shield on the obverse with a rose either above (possibly unique), to the left or to the right. The reverse shows a rose over a radiate sun. The denomination was discontinued in 1470.
