This is particularly true with coins that have "monster toning" (wild toning), "target toning" or "bullet toning" (colors that change from the coin's periphery in toward to the center), "rainbow toning" (multiple colors), ...
The rainbow toning seen on some original, toned coins is a prism effect caused by light reflecting and bending off the surface of the coin. The deeper the sulfide penetration, the darker will be the coin's apparent color.
