The rays were removed from the half dollar and quarter at the end of production in 1853, but the arrows lingered for two more years, probably to reinforce awareness of the change.

 


Almost all of the record mintage of Arrows & Rays quarters went into circulation. More coins were struck that year than all of the previous years of the series combined, which probably accounts for why relatively few were saved.

rays Term for the lines that represent sun rays on coins. First used on Continental dollars and Fugio cents, they were also used on some 1853-dated quarters and half dollars as well as 1866 and some 1867 five-cent coins.

Rays Nickel The first five-cent pieces, issued in 1866 and 1867, had rays interspersed between the 13 stars on the reverse. Early die wear and breakage led the mint to delete these rays on the remaining coins of 1867-1883.

rays: refers to the lines radiating on the backs of the Quarter Dollars and Half Dollars in 1853 to indicate a change in their weights.
Red: describes a copper coin that has full, original red color.

The rays extending from the inner rims on these coins are said to represent the four walls of a city. As of yet, we can find no reason to assume this is true.

Term referring to the quarters and half dollars of 1853. The rays were removed in 1854 because of striking difficulties presented by the busy design.

Four thick rays are between the two heaviest rays on the left side and are below the first S (STATES).
Right side of star above eagle's eye.
Curl above IB (PLURIBUS) small and distant from U (UNITED).

For 1854, the rays were deleted from the quarter and half dollar, creating the Arrows type. This design was struck in 1854 at Philadelphia (no mintmark) and New Orleans (O). In 1855, San Francisco (S) augmented the production of the other two mints.

The 1867 with-rays Shield nickel is much scarcer than the 1866, as only a little over 2 million were struck. Still, values for the 1867 with-rays aren't too unreasonable: $37 in Good, $67.50 in Fine.

While Arrows and Rays Halves are relatively available in the better grades of AU and lower-end Uncirculated, there are very few truly Gem, upper-end Mint State examples known.

The Eye of Providence with emanating rays, referred to during the period as an Eye of Providence in Glory, was first proposed by the French medal designer Pierre Eugène Du Simitière as an element of the great seal of the new nation.

The head, in fact, was the portrait of Helios, the sun god, wearing a crown of rays. The head was copied from the great statue of Helios named among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes.

Just before and after totality the sun's rays penetrate through the moon's valleys to create a short star burst effect prior to the sun disk's reappearance.

It was decided to hand punch arrowheads on either side of the date and add a "glory" of rays on the reverse dies of the quarter and half dollar.

Two different ec themes were offered, a classic Mickey Mouse Rays coin ( DL0001 DL0005 DL0007 ) and the Bear Country theme, just before Bear Country was renamed Critter Country in 1988, ( DL0002 DL0006).

Interesting varieties among Shield nickels include the scarce 1867 With Rays, which is a major rarity with Proof finish, the 1873 with large over small 3 in date, ...

Shield nickels with and without rays
The metallurgical difficulties were the source of many minting errors in the Shield nickels.

She is shown in full stride with rays of sunlight behind her and the U.S. Capitol Building to the left of her flowing gown. Encircling her are 46 stars-one for each state in the Union at that time.

Do you see the sun's rays streaming from his head? The reverse shows a rose, the symbol of Rhodes, because of the pun Rhodes/rose.
The letters, in Greek, name the person (not a king) responsible for minting the coin.

Buck of Delaware, Ohio, asked: "The nameless rays over the head represent what? Maybe captured German bayonets, or the eagle head war bonnet of an Indian, so badly moth eaten that only the quill of the feathers remain.

What makes this year unique in the series are the two distinct varieties, "with rays" on the reverse and "without rays" each having different values.

A headdress or crown with rays used as the distinguishing mark of Sol, an eastern sun god, and originally used as a posthumous representation of an emperor. It becomes common in art of the late empire as a way of associating the emperor with Sol.

It is to Aristaeos that the star, the bee, and Seirios the dog encircled by rays make allusion on the coins of Ceos.

The series has more than its share of very rare dates, leading with the unique 1866 - No Motto.

6 rays over bust, hand extended before, tamgha behind/Mounted horseman, tamgha of Soter Megas, `General Coinage', Taxila mint, MACW 2953. Centered, most legend clear as are the portrait and rev.

Arrows - Or Arrows at date. In the 1800's, arrows were placed on both sides of the date to indicate a change in the weight of a coin. Arrows and Rays describe a type where the coin had Arrows at the date and rays around the Eagle on the reverse.

radiate - decorated with rays, as in a radiate crown, a symbol of association with the sun gods, Helios and Sol. Also an indication of posthumous divinity of an emperor.

that year.  The two varieties that can be found are: three rays from the
sun below the word ONE and four rays of the sun below the word ONE.

The Great White Shark leaps to life on this dollar coin swimming towards you (it's next meal), the sun's rays piercing the water's edge. This shark is the most feared sea creature on earth.

Glory
A heraldic term for stars, rays or other devices placed as if in the sky or luminous.

The obverse has the central design of an eye surrounded by rays and the legend NOVA CONSTELLATIO. The reverse IS LIBERTAS JUSTITIA 1783 around a wreath in which appears u.s. and the value.

The reverse features a majestic eagle flying in the rays of the sun. In the upper part, the inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - TWENTY DOLLARS appear in two concentric arcs.

There is a feature in the field that appears somewhat like a fingerprint but which represents rays of the sun; this characteristic is not distinct on all pieces.

She is dressed in a flowing robe with nearly waist-length hair. Behind her are the rays of a rising sun and in the lower left, the United States Capitol’s dome is visible.

Additional areas to check for strike: the veins in the leaves on the right side, the horizontal lines at the top and left side of the shield, obverse; on the reverse, the rays (if any). Superior eye appeal is required.
