RECUT DATE
A die that has had its date changed (recut) for use in later years in an effort to get greater use of the dies. See Overdate.
RED AND BROWN ...

recut date
This term is used interchangeably with "repunched date." PCGS prefers the term "repunched date" as it is more accurate. See "repunched date" for a full definition.

Red Book - The Handbook of U.S. Coins, a retail price guide for U. S. coins published annually, originally written by R. S. Yeoman.

Recut Date. MS-63 (PCGS). Lustrous bright greenish yellow gold with an average strike, slightly weak hair details over the ear and corresponding point of the reverse. The surfaces are very lightly abraded, unlike most known examples.

Some 1795 half dollars have a recut date, but these are not unduly elusive. Some 1795 pieces have three leaves under each of the eagle's wings, instead of the normal two, and these are scarce.
