The reduced size Capped Bust dime was introduced in 1828, the same year "Old Hickory," Andrew Jackson, became President.

The reduced weight was mandated by the Mint Act of February 12, 1873, an event later labeled the "Crime of ‘73″ by silver mining interests and their political allies.

Made in reduced numbers, gold dollars were produced through the eve of the Civil War. Beginning in late December, 1861, by which time the Civil War had been underway for over a half year, the public became wary of the outcome.

Small date
Term referring to the size of the digits of the date on a coin. The use of this term implies that a large or medium date exists for that coin or series.

Due to the reduced income by striking low fineness coins, the idea was announced to conduct the monetary reform of the Livonia in 1422. It was decided, that 1 new artig = 12 pre-reform Lubeck schillings = 1 counting schilling.

The same size was maintained, but the weight was reduced from the standard 48 grains to 42 grains, due to the use of a lighter alloy.

In order for silver coins to circulate, they were reduced in size in 1853 (as gold coins had been in 1834), which had the effect of putting the United States on a Gold Standard.

The first melting occurred in 1834 when the gold content of U.S. coins was reduced and nearly all gold coins minted from the period 1795 to 1834 were melted because their intrinsic value exceeded their face value.

From 1920 until 1946 the bullion content of British silver coins was reduced to 50% pure silver. The table below is a guide to the actual silver content of these coins before been circulated.

The extreme heat of the annealing process reduced this organic material to a cinder. Removal is usually not possible without damaging the coin.

F:D was restored to the legend in 1955 and the number of rim beads was reduced to 101. This obverse was used for all shillings from 1955 onwards.
