Reeded Edge
Term for the grooved notches on the edge of some coins. These were first imparted by the Mint’s edge machine, later in the minting process by the use of close collars - these sometimes called the third die or collar die.

reeded edge: The result of a minting process that creates vertical serrations on the edge of a coin.

Repunched Date - A date with one or more of the digits punched more than once in different locations and/or orientations.

Reeded edge coins are a nineteenth century invention, so if your coin has reeding on the edge it's modern.
Some coins have lettering impressed on a plain edge. This is used as an anti counterfeiting measure.

500 silver and Nickel with a reeded edge and later a security edge. There is no mint mark for Calcutta. The Bombay issues have a small dot or diamond on the reverse under the ornate (the lotus flower) near the bottom of the coin (see illustration).

This predecessor of modern reeded edges was cut individually on each coin and varies greatly in depth even on the same coin. Presumably to prove the coin was not plated, this did not work. Fourrees exist.
