If a date was punched into the die and then punched in again in a different position it is considered to be a repunched date.

864 1868 Repunched Date. EF-45. Lightly cleaned with pale yellow gold and minor hairlines. A few other tiny abrasions are noted. An important opportunity due to the repunched date, not discussed by Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia.

Repunched dates can be minor, or highly evident. This 1894 Indian cent will fetch prices up to $4500, compared to $150 for a normal coin.

Repunched Date
A date with at least one digit punched into the die more than once, in order to strengthen its appearance. This often results in a slight doubling effect of the digit(s) when a coin is struck from a such a die.

Repunched Date - A date with one or more of the digits punched more than once in different locations.
Restrike - A coin struck at a later date from original dies.
Rim - The outer edge of a coin, often raised to avoid premature wear.

PROBLEM: The most trivial die varieties, repunched mint marks (RPMs), double dies, repunched dates and even die states command additional money and additional requirements on the part of the collector's knowledge.

Repunched dates, overdates, and even silly errors can be found during this era. In the later category we have a variety of 1846 half dollar with the last digit of the date punched over an erroneous horizontal 6; the engraver, possibly James B.

One major error variety is recognized - the 1918 8-over-7 repunched date.
