Perhaps the coin could be cleaned completely and retoned replacing the mixed surface with an even tone. A poor attempt would be quite likely to ruin the coin leaving a porous and ugly surface.

However, if the coin has ever been cleaned, retoned, or dipped too often, the lustre will be reduced to some degree. And, of course, some coins are made better than others.

Original - Referring to any aspect of a coin that retains its original state. Original toning means natural, not retoned or cleaned. Original luster means undisturbed luster that hasn't been enhanced through artificial methods.
On this coin the metal of the coin was engraved and retoned, but it really makes no difference if the patina was carved, or solid metal engraved, it is at best fraud bordering on forgery, even though the base coin was genuine.
The toning quality is of a very natural and pristine character. Coins that have been dipped and are retoned may appear rather dull or flat looking in their colour quality by comparison. See Toning and Artificial Toning.
