Reverse Brockages of the Gallic Empire
Striking coins by hand requires a great deal of coordination and skill on the part of every member of the minting team. Most coins testify that these workers were good at their craft.

The reverse
Type A
Single strong small feather between the eagle's wing feathers; U in AUST round; lower end of center shield rounded; Three center tail feathers.

Reverse I - The top flower is open with long, curved petals. The "1" in the date has a flat top.
Reverse II - The top flower is closed. The "1" in the date has a slanted top.
Reverse IIa - Variant of Type II on a few 1862 Rupees.

Reverse A was the first reverse type, used on Philadelphia-minted 1878 coins only, and is most noted for an eagle with 8 tail feathers. Reverse B was used on some 1878-P, all San Francisco-minted 1878's, and the 1878 Carson City issue.

In 1993 the reverse design was slightly modified by moving the letters "AM" in America closer together. Some examples were either struck as test pieces or by accident dated 1992 with a 1993 reverse design known as 1992 "Close AM".

Explanation: A coin where the background is frosted looking and the design has a polished mirror like look to it.

The new reverse presented an elegant wreath of elongated leaves resembling laurel, the ancient symbol of victory. Just above the heavy bow appear three-part leaves or trefoils suggesting cotton or even maple leaves.

A diagnostic characteristic of the rarely seen variety is that the reverse Leaf on the lower right side points between the R and I of America as opposed to in the 14 Star the same leaf points to the bottom of the I in America.

Reverse Die Rotation
This is a measurement of the degree of difference between the axis of the obverse of the coin and the reverse of the coin. Basically, it reveals the alignment of the dies when they were attached to the press.

The reverse type is a barely draped male Victory facing left, holding a laurel wreath in his right hand, and what looks like a branch in his left arm. The reverse legend is VICTORIAE BRIT, Victory over the Brits.

reverse cameo - Also known as reverse proof. A coin where the field is frosted and the design is mirrored. Essentially flipping the contrast of a proof coin.
riddler - The Mint's machine that sorts out the incorrect size and defective blanks.

Reverse - Technically the side of the coin that is face down when the coin is struck but usually (and correctly) used to describe the 'Tail' side which doesn't have the monarch on it and is usually considered of less importance than the 'Head'.

Obverse/reverse. If coins are slightly bowed, the obverse is taken as the convex side. This usually is the side with the monogram of the emperor.

Proof coins have shiny fields and frosted devices (designs) whereas reverse proof coins have frosted fields and shiny devices.

The reverse design in addition to the statutory requirements "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum", and the denomination "ONE DIME" depicts a Roman fasces. Walter Breen in his Encyclopedia gives an excellent interpretation of the fasces.

The reverse bore an American eagle with head turned left, holding three arrows symbolizing strength, and an olive branch representing peace. On its breast is the U.S.

The reverse, as mandated by law, is adorned with an eagle. To the casual observer, this rendition seems to be one of the prettiest ever to grace a coin. The eagle is depicted in full flight with wings open; it is a gorgeous reverse.
