ring test A test used to determine whether a coin was struck or is an electrotype or cast copy. The coin in question is balanced on a finger and gently tapped with a metal object- a pen, another coin, and so on.

 


ring test: a method of determining if a coin is a cast counterfeit by tapping it with a pen or pencil. A genuine coin has a nice ring to it, like a tuning fork. A cast fake will give a dull thud.

Kennedy's mandate to land a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s, Apollo 11 was an engineering test of the Apollo system; therefore, Armstrong snapped photos of the LM so engineers would be able to judge its post-landing condition.

This example has a clear ring, unlike most electrotypes which simply emit a dull thud when subjected to the ring test. Believed to be of Mint origin, and numismatically accepted as such. The specific gravity of 8.
