Sacagawea Dollars began being minted in 2000 in accordance with the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997. These coins were made to replace the disliked Susan B.

U.S. Mint error coin dealer Michael S. Byers of Byers Numismatic Corp., discovered and sold the first reported 2000-P Sacagawea dollar struck on a clad Anthony dollar planchet.

Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark in their exploration of the Western United States. She offered geographic guidance in areas where she had lived as a child.

Sacagawea was the Shoshone Indian who assisted the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. Between 1804-1806, while still a teenager, she guided the adventurers from the Northern Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean and back.

Sacagawea Sacagawea (Sakakawea, Sacajawea; see below) (c. 1787 - December 20, 1812) was a Native American woman who accompanied the Corps of Discovery of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

The Sacagawea dollar is a United States dollar coin which has been minted every year since 2000. The coin was first suggested as a replacement for the Susan B.

The new coins will be the same size as the existing Sacagawea dollar coin and will be the same gold color. It will be made of a copper-zinc-manganese-nickel clad copper alloy.
