A Sample of Circulation Dollars
So we can see from this that the reeding seems to be the same for the 2003, 2006, and the second 2008 coins. The 2007 and 2008 coins also appear to match up. The third 2008 coin is different from all the others.

Sample Slab
A type of slab issued by a grading company to demonstrate what a coin looks like when encapsulated. Sample slabs almost always contain very common and low value coins and may or may not bear a grade.

Our sample Otacilia Severa coin is even more a mystery. I show it here as an issue of Rome but the type IVNO CONSERVAT is frequently attributed to the early Eastern mint ('Antioch I, discussed above).

On the 25 sample rounds I had struck from this die it could be seen that most of the scratches and smaller gouges were removed but the largest gouge remained.

Pattern: A sample coin that could be used for circulation.
Planchet: A blank piece of metal used to receive a coin stamp.
Premium Value: The price paid for a coin beyond it's face value.

Specimen - A sample currency note, often but not always with serial numbers of all zeros. The original purpose of such notes was to provide banks and other agencies with examples of newly issued money.

proof silver - unlike a similar term "proof silver coins" which indicates that a silver coin is in proof condition, "proof silvers" refer to samples of pure silver. These are used to test and make comparisons during the coin assaying process.

Normally these coins are in bronze, but these samples appear to be copper-nickel, like the 4 Annas and 8 Annas coins. I examined them carefully to see if they appear to be genuine.

Proof coinage means special early samples of a coin issue, historically made for checking the dies and for archival purposes.

The above may not be "proper" Greek. They are sample dates as actually used on Roman provincial coins minted in Alexandria and other cities.

Assay
A test undertaken to find the metallic content of a coin, INGOT or ORE sample.
Assay Office
An establishment or department of government that assures the content and quality of a coins ALLOY.
