The San Francisco Mint is a branch of the United States Mint, and was opened in 1854 to serve the gold mines of the California Gold Rush. It quickly outgrew its first building and moved into a new one in 1874.

The San Francisco Mint, on the other hand, was close to large gold supplies and made the majority of the double eagles minted from 1862 to 1894.

In 1908 the San Francisco Mint began minting cents in quantities of a fraction of what was being put out in Philadelphia. The trolly fare in that city was being raised to 6 cents and the cent was now important to have in circulation.

Sure, every gold coin collector would love to have an unlimited budget. But few do.

Of the 1909 Indian Head cents, we made them at both Philadelphia (plain, or no mint mark) and San Francisco (with a "S" mint mark). In Philadelphia, we made 14,370,645 Indian Head cents. In San Francisco, we only made 309,000 Indian Head cents.

      There were five Mints used to produce the $10 Liberty: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Philadelphia minted coins from 1838 to 1907.

Reverse B was used on some 1878-P, all San Francisco-minted 1878's, and the 1878 Carson City issue. It was also used on some 1879-S and 1880-CC issues. Reverse B has 7 tail feathers, a parallel top arrow feather and a flat eagle's breast.

This 5-dollar gold coin was privately struck by Thomas and Hiram Norris and Charles Gregg in Stockton, California, near San Francisco. The coin remained unknown until 1958.

Special Mint sets (SMS): Coins produced under special conditions by the United States Mint at San Francisco during the years 1965, 1966 and 1967. These coins have no Mint marks.

From 1942 to 1944 some Australian 3d's were minted in the USA with a D (Denver) or S (San Francisco) mint mark on the reverse of the coin. In addition, in 1951 some 3d's were minted in London, again with a mint mark on the reverse (this time a PL).
