Over Graded Slab Coins
You might read that you should only by slabbed and graded coins. While there is some truth to that, be aware that there are companies who grade and then sell the coins they grade.

PCGS Secure Plus Slab
Different to the Secure Plus Service, coins submitted under a higher service level -those coins with a high value and a quick PCGS turnaround will be given a plus grading if they meet certain grading criteria.
Most coin grading services charge to examine a coin, even if they decide not to grade, slab or certify the coin. borderline - A coin that falls on the edge between two grades.

Within a year, most dealers were on the slab bandwagon. PCGS and NGC were grading very tight. Coins which sold as MS-67 in 1979 were getting grades like MS-63 or MS-64. A coveted MS-65 was a real rarity in any series.
I personally examined one of the pieces prior to it being sealed in in a certification "slab" and found it to be genuine.
NCI will grade many coins the other services will not, but will usually state on the grading certificate and/or slab the specific problem the coin exhibits.

You will have to use basic numismatic principles to grade them. Although they rate a general entry in The Red Book, not all services will slab them. Commons in low grade are no more than a $5 item, or about $15 below uncirculated.

Check out the beautiful treatment of the eye whose pupil has toned black! Unfortunately, it is in a misattributed slab and the weight is uncertain.
Using one of these services is advisable if you believe you have a very valuable, investment-grade coin. They will encapsulate your coin in plastic holder ("slab" it) along with their official grade.
