Sleeper
Refers to a coin which appears to be undervalued when compared to its peers.

A numismatic item, the rarity or future value of which is not generally recognized. Such a coin will be underpriced in current markets relative to coins more common.

For many years my favorite 'sleeper' date in the Gold Dollar series was the 1863. After a long period of neglect, the 1863 has been discovered and it now sells for levels well in excess of current Trends.

Buy sleepers and stoppers. Sleepers are coins that are undervalued in terms of their relative rarity. Stoppers are the most important issues that make up complete sets of coins.

Budget Recommendations: Build a date and mintmark set in F-12 to VF-20 grade. This will be a fascinating endeavor, as the varieties are quite interesting. Many issues are sleepers, even in these grades.
