small cent: as opposed to the Large Cent, these are the smaller-sized copper One Cent pieces struck from 1856 until today.

$50 gold slug. 887 THOUS. on ribbon. K-4. Rarity-5+. AU-55. Lettered edge. Lightly cleaned long ago. Bright, attractive gold surfaces. Far above average in overall quality in the context of this desirable, very early issue.

The unique $50 octagonal shape soon became a symbol of California coinage and was known as a “slug.' Their reverse is an example of what machinists call engine-turning - a design of several concentric circles used on watches of that period.

I have a Quarter with nothing stamped on it. It looks like a "slug" but has the same weight, and color of a quarter, including the sides. Any info on this, please let me know.

Pan-Pac

Complaints continued to pour into the Treasury. For example, due to there magnetic property, many mechanical devices treated the new cent as a slug. Back then, there were quite a few uses for the cent and this was a big deal.
