The alloy caused these small cents to have a pale copper color. Back then people called these cents "white cents" because of their pale color. A few other countries have used some copper nickel alloys of various percentages in their coin production.

The first Pittman sale was held in October 1997 and it featured 1264 lots of coins including half cents, large cents, small cents, minor coins, nickels, half dimes, dimes, gold dollars, half eagles, double eagles, ...

There have been only three basic design types of small cents. The Flying Eagle cent was the first small cent and portrays an Eagle in flight on the dated side and a wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco on the reverse.

But in 1857, the new small cents with the flying eagle design hit the streets in droves, and they were a hit with the U.S. public. The new small cents were much handier to use and carry than previous cumbersome large cents.

The mint-new Lincoln cent struck at Denver in 1914 is most desirable to the collector of small cents.

Mint started issuing the first of the Small Cents, the Flying Eagle type cent. People started to become nostalgic for the old large pennies they were used to seeing in circulation, and started to hoard them.

Among large cents, such rare dates as 1793, and 1799 and 1804 are objects of affection and desire. For the specialist in small cents, the 1856 Flying Eagle, the 1877 Indian, and the 1909-S V.D.B. and 1914-D Lincoln cents are eagerly sought.

They were larger than our modern quarter dollar is today. This large coin was first minted in 1793 and with production lasting until 1857. Collectors call these cents Large Cents as a generic term to separate them from the later Small Cents.

Nickel was relatively new as a coinage metal during the 19th century when it was used in the first United States small cents. New, that is, unless you count the single appearance of nickel used in ancient coins two thousand years earlier.
