2. Uniform smooth black or brown surfaces. Most often the original patina has been removed and the surface of a tooled coin is darkened bare metal or some other artificial patina.

Perhaps the smoothing of flan surfaces was considered desirable to remove irregularities of the casting process. Greek Imperial coins on large flans are particularly prone to voids in the metal that were not erased by striking.

The overall smoothness of the surface due to routine handling suggests that indeed, the coin was in circulation. We tried to explore the possibility where we could determine when this coin was in circulation.

However, the term also applies to eradication of the design from the surface of a die, rendering it smooth, and a new design engraved; thus extending the use of the same die. See also canceled die.

If there is any eye appeal in this grade it comes from the smooth surfaces associated with this grade, as any distracting marks have usually been worn off through circulation.

annealing - The heating and cooling process by which planchets are softened to allow the metal to flow more smoothly during the strike.

There are spots of bright bronze showing in areas of harsh cleaning or possible smoothing in the fields. The field areas around both tips of the hat are of a slightly different color than the rest of the coin, possibly due to tooling or smoothing.

This is a well worn piece with most of the larger details of the designs being worn nearly smooth. A coin in "Very Good" condition is not very good at all. The small details are all gone, as well as most of the large details.

Fine: The design in the center of the coin has worn smooth with just a slight separation of the hair and wing design. Liberty's forehead and hair curls are no longer separated and the majority of the feathers have leveled into one.

As a result, on coins that have the obverse virtually worn smooth, the reverse will still show complete chain detail.

Curated: a recently developed term to describe coins that have been cleaned, but where the cleaning has been so light and well done that it is impossible to tell.

Obverse: Most individual leaves will be separated and some details will be visible, but the leaves will be worn smooth halfway from tip to middle of leaves. Approximately half of the horizontal lines in shield are clearly visible and separated.

luster: Surface quality of a coin, result of light reflected from the microscopic flow lines.

A specimen with a smooth, clean surface is not the norm. Original, uncleaned specimens have coloration ranging from green-gold to attractive orange-gold.

Fair-2 or FR-2 (Fair) - Type and date are barely discernable, but otherwise the coin is damaged or extremely worn with major portions completely smooth.
P-1 (poor) - filler or cull - barely recognizable, most major portions completely smooth ...

Legend is partially worn smooth as is date. On the obverse nearly all details are worn but Liberty's head is fully outlined. The legend merges into the rim. On the reverse the entire wreath is partially won and merged into the rim.

The plug is inserted in the hole and then ground down to be smooth with the fields. A plugged coin can still have value if the overall coin is rare enough. They will bring considerably less than an original unplugged coin.

Almost Good (AG) - Outlined design. Parts of date and legend worn smooth.
This is a used up coin. You should be able to make out the date (possibly with some effort). Often, only parts of the last two digits will be visible.

About Good (AG-3) - Very heavily worn with portions of lettering, date and legends worn smooth. The date may be barely readable.
Good (G-4) - Heavily worn with design visible but faint in areas. Many details are flat.

Now its time to use your fine file and sandpaper to finish up the rough edges of the joint if you have to, to make it smooth inside and out. No need to rush here. Just take it easy and go slow.

Satin or Roman finish proofs were a short-lived experiment showing amazingly smooth, softly glowing surfaces. Matte proofs exist of the 1907 Rolled Edge, 1908 With Motto, 1909, and 1911 through 1915 issues.
