This coin was minted at Smyrna which used to be famous only for being the home of Homer (he wrote Iliad, Odyssey).

Smyrna, Before circ. B.C. 585, EL. Stater, 248.2 grs, B. M. C., Ion., Pl. II. 1., obv lion's head with open jaws, rev rough incuse square. The specific gravity of the stater is 14.36 and its gold contents therefore about 59 percent of pure gold.

The affair of Martin Koszta, a Hungarian refugee, who was seized at Smyrna by an Austrian vessel and given up on the demand of the captain of an American ship-of-war, excited great interest in Europe and redounded to the credit of our government.
