Question: I was told by a friend that star notes were worth more money than the number that is printed on the bill. I have found a few of them, is there any truth to this?

Star three cent silvers often survive in MS-67 grade. An 1852 regular strike inverted date silver coin with an upside-down date is worth $650 in Almost Uncirculated condition. A three cents silver coin proof 1863/2 in MS-67 is worth $10,000.

RIC separates into a third series those coins which show a star in the reverse field. The meaning of these starred issues is unclear to me as is the relative dating of the two series.

The condition of the Star on the reverse rates a special mention as this part of the design is often not fully 'Struck-Up' - especially on 3p and 6p pieces due to filled dies.

Indicates the edge lettering is weaker than normal and has a portion of a letter/star or inscription missing. The missing part could be the serif of an "S" or "T" or part of a star.

Type 1, issued from 1851 to 1853, shows the obverse star with a single outline. After 1853, the weight of the Three Cents coin was reduced.

The star within crescent is a well known Roman astrological motif,
particularly associated with the Severan dynasty.

These coins have a star above the date but it is not a mintmark. The star was intended to signify a change in silver content but that was something which didn't happen.
