The stella never saw regular production; Congress killed the legislation and only patterns were made, all proofs. Unfortunately, mintage records for these pieces have proven to be unreliable.

Stella
A term applied to the experimental four-dollar gold coins struck by the U.S. Mint in 1879-1880. So named for the large star on the coins’ reverse. These are very rare and expensive.

$4 Gold Stellas (1879-1880)
Four-dollar gold pieces, or stellas, so-called from the five-pointed star on the reverse, are patterns, not regular coins. Stellas were produced in 1879 and 1880 at the suggestion of Hon. John A. Kasson, U.S.

Stellas are very rare today, with the highest mintage being 415 pieces for the 1879 Flowing Hair piece. They were all struck as proofs and none were placed in circulation so most pieces encountered today are usually in a high state of preservation.

Stella
Refers to the $4 PATTERN gold pieces minted (PROOF only) in 1879 and 1880. The name comes from the large star on the reverse (Latin translation). Quite scarce and very expensive.

Pattern Stella, 1879
This is a gilt aluminum trial piece for a Stella, or 4-dollar "goloid" coin (a combination of 6g gold, 3g silver, and 1g copper). The coin was intended to help international trade.

Post oak (Quercus stellata) is an oak in the white oak group. It is a small tree, typically 10-15m tall and 30-60cm trunk diameter, though occasional specimens reach 30m tall and 140cm diameter.

These two terms are almost synonymous; however, the term eclipse is usually reserved for Earth, Moon, Sun events and occultation for planetary and stellar mergers.

Regardless of the logic or lack thereof concerning whether such a piece could effectively circulate, the $4 Stella provided a forum for Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and one of his assistants, George T. Morgan, to each create a motif.

3. Four dollar gold pieces or "Stellas", are a "no brainer" as all were issued as patterns. Nonetheless many wealthy collectors include them, as the designs and denominations are quite unique.

This is a beautiful example for this tough date as well as a stellar example for the grade. The fields are well mirrored and the devices are frosty. There are a few strike-through depressions on the face, which give the luster a mottled appearance.
