Susan B. Anthony dollar - The United States government made a silver dollar with Susan B. Anthony's portrait in 1979 to 1981, and then again in one more year, 1999. These "SBA" dollars were short lived and saw little use in commerce.

Though it is round, The Susan B. Anthony dollar may appear 11-sided, due to an 11-sided rim bordering the edge of both sides.

Probably the most shunned dollar coin of all was the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. Highly criticized by the public for being nearly the same size of the quarter, the coin never gained acceptance.

      Authorized by the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997, the new dollar coin replaces the current Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin, which has circulated since 1979. The new dollar coin will be gold in color, have the same diameter as the Susan B.

The coin follows the same weight (8.1 grams) and size standards (26.5 mm) as the Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. Sacagawea dollars haven't been struck for circulation since 2001, and have only been available in Mint Sets.

The Sacagawea Golden Dollar, (obverse designed by Glenna Goodacre), was first issued in 2000 as a replacement for the ill-received Susan B. Anthony dollar coin.

However, Congress was persuaded to honor Susan B. Anthony, a champion of women's rights, and Gasparro was directed to produce an Anthony design. Susan Anthony dollars were struck by the hundreds of millions and placed in circulation in 1979.

However, similar to the Susan B. Anthony dollar in our own time (1979-1981) the public rejected it. Thus, in circulation the career of this silver denomination was brief, with just one year-1875-accounting for any meaningful production.

The Twenty Cent Piece was a very short-lived series that was halted because the public complained about its size being so similar to the quarter (A mistake the Mint repeated with the Susan B. Anthony dollar).

Because the size of the coin and the design elements were so similar to those on the Quarter Dollar, these coins caused a lot of confusion with the general public (similar to the situation that occurred over 100 years later with the Susan B.

Gasparro was born in Philadelphia. He designed both sides of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, both sides of the Eisenhower Dollar, the Lincoln Memorial reverse of the cent, and the reverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar.

Similarly, the Franklin half dollar was only 13 years old when a special act of Congress authorized the Kennedy half. The change from the Eisenhower dollar to the Susan B. Anthony also required a special act of Congress.

Unfortunately, their success has been somewhat limited. The Eunice Shriver commemorative was made with their input, I believe. Let's just say that it makes the Susan B. Anthony dollar look pretty good.

The regular design returned in 1977 and 1978, when the Eisenhower series was terminated in favor of the ill-fated Susan B. Anthony "mini dollar." For these two years, however, no Ikes were coined in silver.
