Ausbeutetaler: Also known as a mining taler, an ausbeutetaler is made from the precious metal found in a specific region; that place or region and the name or image of the mine will appear on the coin.

 


Talers with Maria Theresia's portrait were struck since 1741. Initially, the coins had a changing appearance. Starting with 1765 (after her husband died), the Taler was struck with Maria Theresia's portrait showing a widow's veil.

The taler of Maximilian and Mary of Burgundy is not the only example of renaissance portraiture in the Austrian series. Although of a later date (1522), the coin of Matthaus Lang von SS Wellenburg (1519-40) bears an equally fine portrait.

So what could I have done to stop my 1780 taler restrike from toning like it has? Well I could have given it a quick bath in acetone when I got it in 2008 (and I may well have done but I don't remember).

The experienced collector of German Church and City Talers minted in the 1600's looks at these coins differently than when viewing the Empire coinage. Both are coins and yet that is about where the similarity ends.

It was struck about 1858-59 over a Swiss coin, a "shooting taler" of 1857, perhaps as an experiment by employees of the U.S. Mint. Class III was produced in the 1850s at the Mint for collectors when coin collecting became more popular.

Today, one Class II 1804 Draped Bust dollar is known to exist, struck in 1858 or 1859 over a Swiss taler, with others having been confiscated and melted down.

One of the first "serious" world coins I purchased was an Austrian taler that featured a 3/4 bust of Leopold the Hog Mouth. I'll admit that the ruler's nickname helped influence my purchase.

Klippe coins are usually square or rectangular in shape and are reminiscent of the centuries-old European silver coins, like the 1627 Transylvania 2-taler klippe shown below.
