Ten cents was a significant sum of money, nearly two hours' pay at the Stevens mill. Thus, the American public took very careful note of the new ten-cent piece just showing up in its pocket change at the time: the Seated Liberty dime.

The Roosevelt ten cent piece was first issued less than a year after Franklin Delano Roosevelt's death.This was done by an act of Congress in 1946. Roosevelt was the thirty second president of the U.S.A. He was a president during WWII.

Since I had many of these ten cent coins I knew that they were mostly worthless and I decided not to research this coin in 'The Standard Catalog of World Coins". But, it hurt my sense of order not to research this one coin and I looked it up.

Both the one cent (penny) and the five cent (nickel) are larger than the dime, worth ten cents, and the less common 50-cent coin is larger than the recent Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollar coins.

In addition, fractional currency notes valued at ten cents or less were causing headaches. Congress wanted to drive them out of the economy, and a good way to do that was to produce a five-cent coin that would circulate as opposed to being hoarded.

Although the United States has made ten cent pieces since 1796, only three designs ever appear with any frequency. These are the Barber dime, named after the designer Charles E.
