Tetradrachm of Leontinoi
Struck in Leontinoi, Sicily, about 470 B.C. This coin represents the earliest of the Demareteion series and forms a link between the coins of Syracuse and those of Leontinoi.

Tetradrachm
A medium-sized ancient Greek silver coin, valued at four drachms. Issued by many Greek city-states and kingdoms.

tetradrachm - a four-drachma coin.
togate - wearing a toga, the cloak worn by Roman males on formal occasions.
trecennalia - thirtieth anniversary of rule.

Tetradrachma - An ancient Greek silver coin weighing about 13 to 17 grams, roughly the same size as a U.S. quarter but three times thicker.
Thumbing - The rubbing of skin oil onto a coin in an attempt to hide contact marks.

An amazing broken coin. Looking at the reverse, you can see the silver foil of the obverse behind the left hand of Apollo, which corresponds to the hair over the ear on the obverse.

tetradrachms with the bust of Ptolemy IV, and one or two AV octadrachms of Arsinoë III similar to Fig. 380 but with ΝΙ in the field.

The tetradrachm pictured was struck at the Amphipolis mint sometime between 315 BC and 294 BC and was the equivalent of about two weeks' labor by a mason.

This Syrian tetradrachm (shekel) was issued by the Romans in 46-40 B.C. copying the design issued under Philip Philadelphos, 93-83 B.C., but on a smaller coin. On the back side Zeus is holding Nike.

The Athenian tetradrachm of the Fifth century is probably the most-well known ancient coin. On the Obverse is the goddess Athena in a crested helmet adorned with a garland of three olive leaves. Athena wears earrings and a pearl necklace.

All Parthian tetradrachms, it is currently believed, were produced at the Seleucia mint. In place of the archer used on the reverse of silver drachms, these larger coins usually show other scenes such as the goddess Tyche giving a diadem to the king.

The Siculo-Punic tetradrachm depicted below was struck circa 320 BC during a period in which Carthage was locked in a desperate struggle with the Greek colony of Syracuse for supremacy over the island.

Zenobia and her son Vabalathus had been issuing billon tetradrachms from the mint of Alexandria in Egypt, and antoniniani from Syrian Antioch.

Most likely Nicias was junior colleague of Theophilos who might have succeded to the kingdom of Gandhara. Coins of Nicias are found mostly in Jhelum valley (modern Pakistan).

One of the most treasured coins of Collectors worldwide is an ancient silver coin from Greece known as the Athenian Owl tetradrachm.

This large group served as a bit of a reminder for me that the shekels and half shekels of Tyre (together with some Seleucid tetradrachms and didrachms often struck in Tyre, Sidon, or Antioch) were certainly the most commonly circulated silver coins ...

The coinage consisted very largely of silver tetradrachms which were commonly known as `owls' for obvious reasons and since the coins were of such fine quality, they were readily acceptable to traders in all parts of the Greek world, ...

On the other hand, if you're considering an Egyptian gold Octadrachm, someone may have tried to golden fleece you while you counted the animals two by two. These are replicas and not worth the $375 of a Meredates AE Tetradrachm in Very Fine condition.
