thumbing: applying a foreign substance to the surface of a coin with your thumb, usually to cover a flaw, hairline, or small defect.
token: a small coin with no stated value. These are usually made for commemorative or advertising purposes.

 


Thumbing
A method of attempting to hide surface flaws on a coin by using one's thumb to place a film of grease or wax on the surface of a coin.

Thumbing
The deceptive practice of attempting to hide an abrasion on a coin, by using the thumb to obtain a bit of skin oil from the corner of nose, and carefully rubbing it onto the affected area on the coin.

When Tonguing or Thumbing doesn't work, the coin is sent in to a professional Puttier to enhance its appearance. He applies either automobile bondo or (a later discovery) window glazing compound such as "33 Glazing" lightly to the affected area.
