Tokens are privately issued "coins" distributed by merchants, individuals, and others for the purpose of advertising themselves or their services.
token A substitute for a coin. These have been issued in the past and are still currently issued in huge quantities. Older ones generally were issued by stores and may not have been accepted at other establishments.

Barbados Penny Token
The first coinage expressly made for Barbados was the penny issued in 1788 by Sir Philip Gibbs, a local plantation owner.
