Toned Coin - A coin that has some not mint imparted patina. The patina can be any color. Some toned coins are very impressive, others are downright ugly. Toning can add to or detract from the overall value of the coin.

IN A NUTSHELL: Toning can add natural beauty, and value, to coins. Or it can be the result of tampering by a coin doctor. There are ways to tell.

Toned Coin
A coin that has some coloring that it did not have from the mint. It can be any color. Some toned coins are very beautiful, others are not. Toning can have an effect on the overall value of the coin.

retoned
A term used to describe a coin that has been dipped or cleaned and then has reacquired color, whether naturally or artificially.
reverse ...

retoned: a coin that was stripped of color, then artificially toned to make it look original.
reverse: the back of a coin, usually the side without a date or a head. When you flip a coin and call "Tails," this is the side you want.

Beautifully Toned
First a disclaimer. I do not like toning. But, I understand others do. And I understand that each person can have an individual taste. But folks, I have seen some ugly dark coins in auctions that say, "Beautifully Toned".

Brilliant
Untoned. With no tarnish or oxidation, and with original cartwheel (frosty) or prooflike lustre. Copper coins are considered brilliant if they have full original red.

Gorgeously toned PCGS AU-53 1799 dollar. This is one of the nicest Bust dollars I've ever seen.

Attractively toned with sharp details including St. Andrew carrying the saltire cross. The surfaces are exceptionally blemish-free. Superior to most examples seen in the market.

Artificially Toned - A coin which has been treated in some way to simulate a natural toning or give the appearance of age. It is sometimes done to disguise a badly cleaned coin. The colour is often very dark and somewhat lifeless.

The celator of this issue has captured a remarkable degree of personality considering the formalized portrait style. The image masterfully portrays a crafty Oriental potentate, none too secure on his throne.

Brilliant - Untoned (color as minted) surfaces of a coin.
Broadstrike/Broadstruck - A coin struck without a firmly seated collar, resulting in "spreading" outwards, but still showing all design details.

The coin apparently was found with the silver toned completely black and was partially cleaned, with the original silver sulfide toning visible as ugly black splotches in the recesses and corrosion pits.

Some "naturally" occurring toned coins bring a premium in the collector market due to their unique beauty. Others may bring less than an un-toned coin when the toning is unattractive. Also see "corrosion".

They constantly see coins that have been toned with cigar smoke, sulfur, shoe polish and just about everything else ever thought up by a coin dealer's devious mind.

Firstly, rainbow toned Perth copper isn't common, it is much easier to find reddish or brown Perth copper and very nicely rainbow toned coins are quite scarce.

It is most important when scanning toned copper, or other dark coins. Scanners tend to auto-adjust based on what is being scanned, ...

Most experienced collectors prefer toned silver coins and will pay a premium for attractively toned examples, but some collectors, especially inexperienced ones, prefer bright and shiny silver coins.

After about 1980 the craze for attractively toned coins spurred some prehensile dealers to artificially tone their wares. These were then peddled to a naive public (oxymoron) at grades higher than their underlying surfaces called for.

Comments: Another more darkly toned example of the coin discussed above. There appears to be a planchet or production flaw of some type on the obverse edge causing a crecent shaped gap from the bottom of the harp to the O in the legend.

The act of improving the overall appearance of a coin by using dip or other chemicals to lighten the central portion of a toned coin to project the appearance of a peripherally toned coin with frosty centre.

Others prefer coins with untoned surfaces. Dark, ugly toning is often called 'tarnishing,' although scientists consider toning/tarnish/corrosion to be synonymous.

Perhaps the coin could be cleaned completely and retoned replacing the mixed surface with an even tone. A poor attempt would be quite likely to ruin the coin leaving a porous and ugly surface.

The same set with all beautifully toned original coins or with a mix of toned coins and superb black and white cameo pieces is probably likely to retain more of its value and interest levels even in a poor market.

In any case, if you have any tarnished (or toned) coins, take a close look at them and see how they look. Once you learn to appreciate toned coins, you'll be glad you never dipped any in silver polish.

Coins with natural toning may at times provide exceptional eye-appeal and command higher prices than an untoned specimens A coin that is known to have been artificially toned (a deceptive practice) will bring much lower than usual prices.

Writing in the June, 1985 issue of The Numismatist, noted commemorative coin specialist Anthony Swiatek warned: "A number of coins are artificially toned for the sole purpose of catching the unknowledgeable.

A term to indicate that the buyer of a particular numismatic item in a particular grade wants to view the coin before he buys it. He may have a customer who wants an untoned coin - or a toned coin, or some other specific requirement.

This coin may be brilliant or lightly toned with very few contact marks on the surface or rim. Copper coins will have full luster with original or slightly darkened color and should be designated as "red" or "red brown".

Choice Uncirculated (MS-65) - An above average Uncirculated coin which may be brilliant or lightly toned and has very few contact marks on the surface or rim.

So if the cleaning happened long ago and the surfaces have re-toned attractively, then the cleaning may be overlooked by most collectors.

Note: Emmett does not mention a star in the field on this issue. Also, this example has gorgeous, toned silvered surfaces, rarely found on potin tetradrachms.

A qualifier used to describe a brilliant untoned silver coin in its natural state (i.e. not cleaned!)

Until 1917, farthings were issued in an artificially toned state so that they would not be confused with the half-sovereign coin, but by the end of the war half-sovereigns were no longer being struck.
