Transitional issue
A coin struck after an "official" series ends, or before an "official" series starts. It can also refer to a coin struck with either the obverse or the reverse of a discontinued or upcoming series.

Today the transitional issues are highly desired, representing as each does a coin with a "story." As noted above, the Harry Bass Collection coin is especially beautiful.

The double arch, which is also found on one Richmond variety called a transitional issue, connects the second and fourth crosses with the center in a smaller arch below the larger arch.
