This tiny silver coin is also known as a "Trime" or a "Fish-scale". The odd denomination is tied to the Postal rates at the time, which were also the justification for the Gold Three-Dollar Coin.

Trimes of the 1859-1873 years are usually available only in higher grades, as later issues did not circulate extensively. Buy the lowest grades you can, down to G-4.

Also, to help alleviate matters, the silver three-cent piece or trime was introduced in 1851, of lesser silver content alloy (just 75% instead of 90%) than the silver coins that had been taken from circulation.

The term "trimes" is often used today. The three cent silver coin was minted from 1851 to 1873 at the Philadelphia mint. The New Orleans mint also struck some of the silver three cent coins in 1951 only.
