The two guineas was only issued in 1701 during the sole reign of William III, with the reverse reverting to the cruciform shields design of James II.

The gold Two Guineas valued at forty two shillings was first minted in 1664 under Charles II and ended in 1753 under George II.

Four denominations of gold coins were issued-the five guineas, two guineas, guinea and half-guinea. The name `guinea' is derived from gold supplied by the Africa Company which operated on the Guinea Coast.

The Africa Company (whose Elephant and Castle emblem appears on many of these pieces) imported this metal from the coastal land of Guinea. This coin was supplemented in 1664 with another valued at two guineas.
