A two pound coin in the same nickel brass alloy as the pound coin (thought to be 70% copper, 24½% zinc and 5½% nickel) was first introduced in 1986 as a commemorative coin, although it was legal tender and was accepted by shops.

Football World Cup 1996 Two Pound Coin
The design of the 1996 UK £2 coin is still growing on us.

A good example is the incuse lettering around the edge of a Modern British One pound or two pound coin. (on some two pound coins it reads 'Standing on the shoulders of giants').

A 20p coin got introduced (sometimes called 'the washer' in disgust - it's not a very elegant coin), so did a pound coin and a two pound coin, both liked I think.
