Type collecting becomes, except for the wealthy, impossibly expensive for choice condition 18th and early nineteenth century issues, particularly gold coins. Even well worn "good" condition coins can run from $500 up for most specimens.

My BVG theory applies really well to gold type collecting. Let's take a look at the various major gold types produced between 1838 or so (the introduction of the Classic Head design) and 1933 (the abolishment of gold issues for circulation).
Truly the path forward is up to you, when collecting a type set. I'd suggest thinking about the following before setting on the path of type collecting.
