Type Three gold dollar The Small Indian Head design struck from 1856 until the series ended in 1889. San Francisco did not receive the Type Three dies in time to strike the new design in 1856, those coins from that Mint being the Type Two style.
Type Three gold dollars were produced from 1856 through 1889. This is one type that as a collector I might splurge a bit on. Very high quality pieces are more available than one might expect and they often have exceptional eye appeal.

The second most common Type Three gold dollar from the Dahlonega Mint. Most known specimens are weakly struck on the hair and headdress of Liberty and in the center portion of the reverse.
