United States Notes were printed in the following denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1000, $5000, and $10,000.

 


United States Notes were used before the creation of the modern Federal Reserve System as a way of moderately influencing the money supply by federal government fiat.

United States note: A specific type of note first authorized in 1862 and called legal tender notes; name officially changed to United States notes in July 1873. The term "United States note" is not a generic term for all forms of U.S. paper money.

Among the most interesting of all United States notes are the inexpensive and generally ignored (I don't recall anyone making special mention of them in recent times) Civil War era five-cent fractional currency pieces bearing the portrait of "Clark.

They are issued by the Federal Reserve Banks and have replaced United States notes which were once issued by the Treasury Department. The authority of the Federal Reserve Banks to issue notes comes from the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.

Jackass Note $10 United States Note issued from 1869-1928. A small eagle at center bottom appears, when held inverted, to be the head of a floppy eared jackass.

These notes are printed with the words "United States Note" in the scrollwork at the top center of the note. These notes, issued at a time when money was redeemable for gold or silver, were backed only by the credit of the United States Government.
