The "Upset" coin error.
An upset coin is produced during minting when the dies for the reverse and obverse of the coin are not aligned correctly.

 


Upset
A mint error which occurs when a coin has been struck with rotated dies. The difference in angle between an upset coin and a "normal" one is measured in degrees. An angle of less than 15 degrees is not considered to be a major mint error.

A machine that raises the outer rim on a planchet prior to striking. Upsetting ensures that the rims are properly formed during striking.

Upset
A coin exhibiting an error where the two sides are not correctly aligned. This is caused when one of the dies in the coining press works loose and rotates to a different angle before striking the coin.

Finally, the upset planchets go to the coinage presses, where with a single stroke, they are stamped with the designs and inscriptions that make them into coins.

The technical term for this rim is the upset rim because when the coins go through the minting process, the rim is created by the "upsetting" machine.

Normally the blank rotates through the mill which becomes increasingly tighter on the opposing sides of the blank as it progresses through. This creates the pressure necessary to upset the rim.
