Valerian would be the first and only emperor to be taken captive but the humiliation would not end there. Although Valerian is reported to have offered a large sum for his own freedom, the Persian king chose instead to keep him as his prisoner.

Valerian (b. 195), an ex-consul, was appointed by Gallus to campaign on the Upper Danube. After Aemilian's revolt he invaded Italy, and when Aemilian was assassinated Valerian and his son Gallienus were proclaimed joint emperors.

253 of Valerian and his son Gallienus the final chapter in the dissolution of the Augustan monetary system is opened.

The antoninianus became more and more debased until, during the great crisis which followed the capture of the emperor Valerian in A.D. 260 it was reduced to a mere bronze piece with a thin coating of silver.

By the middle of the reign of Gallienus Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus (218-268) ruled the Roman Empire as co-emperor with his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and then as the sole Roman Emperor from 260 to 268.
