Variety
Many coins, particularly older ones, are attributable as to die variety. Nowhere in American numismatics is this more evident than among large cents bearing the date 1794.
Shortly after his announcement the same variety was found on 1998 dated cents (See Randy Camper's February 5th front page Coin World story).
A new buffalo nickel variety?
Jim Davis, a 58-year-old collector from Dallas, may have discovered a new variety in the 2005 buffalo nickel. He believes he's the first to have discovered it, but no one has been able to confirm or deny that yet.

The variety enthusiast takes great pride in the knowledge that they have obtained. They will then use this knowledge to their advantage, usually by purchasing coins at normal prices that they can sell later for modest or even substantial profits.
Die Variety - Proofs were usually struck from one or two pairs of dies, and these dies were often used solely for proofs. Therefore, any coin struck from proof dies is at least somewhat more likely to be a proof.
Die variety identification of early dimes started late. Most die varieties are identified by the position of the date, the spacing and alignment of stars, the size of 10 C. and the exact position of letters above the ends of the motto scroll.

minor variety
A coin that has a minor difference from other coins of the same design, type, date, and mint. This minor difference is barely discernible to the unaided eye.
For a variety of reasons, early gold coins are among the most difficult United States issues to grade. There is often discrepancy in grading these coins, even between experts.
Scarce variety, mint mark missing. Probably struck from a die made before an I punch was available or from one where the I was omitted by oversight.
