Dirt, or other foreign substance sticking in the recesses of a coin's surface. Can be cleaned, if done professionally, without hurting the value of the coin.

Comments: This is a worn and mottled specimen with some dark areas and verdigris. On the obverse legend one dot in the visible rosette is hidden in a dark area (the dot closest to the outer row of beads) and not readily visible on the scanned image.

Not considered are the more serious defects such as graffiti, verdigris, severe detracting marks and obvious damage as well as unprofessional attempts at cleaning. Such problems should always be mentioned in addition to the grading of the coin.

False patina is in general black, coarse, and glossy or the color of verdigris, tender to the point of any sharp instrument. The genuine patina or antique encrustation is most often extremely brilliant and hard as the metal itself.

Lustrous medium yellow gold with a tiny spot of verdigris at back of hair. Choice for the grade and very appealing.

- The market accepts minor (one or two) 'green spots' - whether PVC or verdigris - on copper coins.
- On copper coins, either the grade or the color designation may curry the favor of doubt, but not both.
