VERY GOOD (VG)
An ancient coin is worn to VG when the minor details are largely gone, and many major details are worn through and only visible around the edges of the design.

 


Very Good (VG-8) - Well worn with main features cleasr an bold although rather flat.
Fine (F-12) - Moderate to considerable even wear. Entire design is bold with overall pleasing appearance.

Very Good: a grade range of 7 to 11 on a grading scale of 1 to 70.

Very Good The term corresponding to the grades VG-8 and VG-10. In these grades, between Good and Fine, a coin has slightly more detail than in Good, usually with full rims except on certain series such as Buffalo nickels.

Very Good ("VG") - Heavily worn. Most details have been worn off, there is still some detail in the lower areas. Morgans still have full rims left at this state, but they show wear. VG8 on the Sheldon scale.

Well worn, and shows slight detail on the main features of the coin. The coins overall appearance will be noticeable, but well worn.

Very Good (VG-8)
This is a well worn piece with most of the larger details of the designs being worn nearly smooth. A coin in "Very Good" condition is not very good at all. The small details are all gone, as well as most of the large details.

Very Good (VG) - Well worn. Design clear, but flat and lacking details.

VG / Very Good
A grading term used to describe a well-worn coin with main features clear and bold - although rather dull and flat. On the SHELDON SCALE, it corresponds to a numerical grade between 5-10.

VG = Very Good A misleading term but still used everywhere coins are collected. Wear is now around 51% - 70% and the high areas of the design are well and truly worn flat.

VG-8 (Very Good) - Full rim with clearly discernable devices and features. Most legends are readable clearly, but the whole coin is still significantly worn.

VG-8 (Very Good) - major design elements, letters and numerals are worn but clear, but the whole coin is still significantly worn.

Very good (VG) : Shows an appreciable amount of wear. A coin in this condition should be free of serious gouges or mutilations but may be somewhat scratched up from use.

Outright counterfeits can also be a problem with Draped Bust coins. Look for poorly executed designs, dull, lifeless surfaces, or seams along the edge of the coin. More detail about this later.

VG stands for very good which means which means the entire design of the coin being very weak showing a few details and containing the full rim. This means that the coin is not so well preserved but the condition is not so bad.

Coin Grading: Very Good or Fine?
Oh no, as if worrying about your grades or your kids' grades wasn't enough, now you need to watch for coin grades. What does "choice" mean? Is that like USDA choice? What does "fine" mean or "very fine"?

Even the work of very good photographers can sometimes be improved. The top photo was taken by a professional at one of the world's top auction houses. It's a good photo but far from perfect.

Circulated coins, at the time of this writing in 1993, consisted of the following grades: Poor, Fair, About Good, Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine (sometimes Extra Fine), and About Uncirculated.

Mule is a numismatic term for a coin whose obverse and reverse are mismatched.

A common date will only retail $5-$9 in Good- prices for Good and Very Good common-date Barber quarters should remain fairly low as Barber quarters usually are found in this condition.

Our take is that it's still good to very good (Not G to VG). Not great, but certainly better than ok. I guess we'll find out from this list. People are still looking to buy coins for their collection.

Very good examples of soft struck coins are certain Morgan dollars from the New Orleans Mint. In order to prolong the life of the coin dies, the pressure of striking the coins was reduced. This produced coins with rounded shallow detail.

Style is very good, but nonetheless a little off, e.g., the grapes are engraved backwards. The obverse with monograms in fields, S-G period VII, normally has reverse with M-A, etc. within the border around the grape-bunch.

In contrast, older presses in the 1800's did not have very good cycle control. When the press set up people gradually increased the pressure they could not engage the press for one cycle only, the press would strike 2-3 times before it stopped.

Coins, in his 1998 edition the oak tree shilling is listed as follows: Good $375; Very Good $850; Fine $2,000; Very Fine $3,600 and Extremely Fine $5,500. I should caution you there are many reproductions of these coins.

A coin which is better than Good but not quite Very Good may be described as G-VG, a particularly nice Very Fine specimen may be described as Choice Very Fine (or VF-EF), etc.

a distinct rim separates a Very Good condition coin from the lower, less valuable, Good condition.

If you discover a coin in very good condition, you should try and identify it. There are many books available on the subject or you can take your treasure to a local dealer for assessment.

A Charlotte gold dollar graded Mint State-63 will show a sharp strike and will have very good luster. The surfaces will be clean to the naked eye but light magnification will reveal some small marks or hairlines either in the fields or on the devices.

This evolved for a time to the letter grading system of Basal State (also Poor (PO)), Fair (Fr), Almost Good (AG), Good (G), Very Good (VG), Fine (F), Very Fine (VF), Extra Fine (EF or XF), Almost Uncirculated (AU), ...

Historical or currency gold coins, especially rare coins, or examples in very good condition, are more resistant to the movements of the gold spot price, since they have an inherent value as collectible artefacts, but it still affects them.

If mint condition can't be found, look for excellent to very good condition. Concentrate on items produced to promote the sale and consumption of Coca-Cola. Avoid commonly found modern edition Coca-Cola
