VF-30 (Good Very Fine) - Legends are clear, devices show all detail with little wear; high points are lightly worn.
EF-40 (Extremely Fine) - Legends are sharp, devices are clear with slight but obvious wear on the high points.

 


VF-30 This is for "Very Fine" (the grade) and "30" (the numerical designation of the grade). The devices are sharp with only a small amount of blending. Up to 75% of the original detail is evident. See also Very Fine.

760 1850 VF-30. Warm honey gold. Some lustre still remains. About the grade that one expects when encountering an 1850 double eagle.

I chose VF-30 because to my eye it represents the most affordable grade in which all of the coin's features stand out clearly. I decided to get these six coins in six different slabs for the visual interest, the novelty, and the daftness.

Choice Very Fine (VF-30)
Lightly worn, especially on the highest points, but all lettering and details are sharp.

Very Fine Plus (VF-30)
There is a light even wear on all but the most protected surfaces, and the details on the high points are worn, though there is still some sharpness to the major design features and lettering.

Choice Very Fine (VF-30) - Light even wear on the surface and highest parts of the design. All lettering and major features are sharp.

Among early cents, an outstanding grade for certain varieties might be VF-20 or VF-30. A 1793 cent in either one of these grades is highly desirable and will attract many bids if offered at auction.

VF coins come in VF-20, VF-25, VF-30 and occasionally VF-35. The key word here is major. Minor features such as some of the finer hair detail, feathers, etc. will be worn. Take a roll of quarters from the bank.

Also, the ANA Guide breaks down the higher collector grades (Very Fine, Extremely Fine) into VF-20, VF-30, EF-40 and EF-45. Uncirculated grades get three numbers for MS-60, MS-65, and MS-70.
