Watermark - During the production of some paper, a special mark or design is implanted into the paper which is visible or fully visible when the paper is held up to the light.

Watermark
An unobtrusive design imparted to the fibres of banknote paper at the time of the paper's manufacture. The watermark is normally visible only when held up to the light. The technique is often used as an anti-counterfeiting measure.

* Watermark: Hold the note up to the light to see if a faint image of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton appears to the right of his large portrait. It should be visible from both sides of the note.

Printed on fibrous paper watermarked with a repeating script US. This note is inscribed "Payable to Order." Further, the reverse is oriented differently with a different layout of type.

Capitol on the reverse, a security thread which glows yellow under ultraviolet light, a numeric 50 which shifts color from black to green when tilted, and a watermark of Grant.

In the thirteenth century, logo design evolved from simple ciphers to trademarks for traders and merchants. These early examples of logo design include masons' marks, goldsmith's marks, paper maker's watermarks and watermarks for the nobility.

A note that has no folds or teller flicks marks, it may be slightly rippled in the area of the watermark.

In order to prevent forged currency, various technologies such as watermarks are inserted into most paper currencies. In the early 21st century, the use of RFID tags has been proposed to track bank notes which were illegally obtained.

According to Clark, Cist and Steiner produced an ordinary laid paper German Declaration of Independence broadside, without a watermark, measuring 16 inch­es by 12 3/4 inches as early as July 6th, the day after Dunlap's printing .

The background watermark is obvious, but with a clear space for the security thread that was introduced in World War II. The actual day of issue, 9 June 1950 (I was eight months old), is traditional, and there is no reverse.
