Wire Edge eagle The 1907 Indian Head eagle for which only 500 coins were struck. Technically, a pattern, this design featured a fine wire rim and surfaces unlike any other United States issue.

 


wire edge: a variety of the 1907 $20 High Relief gold coin that has a partial or full wire rim. The other variety is the Flat Edge.
wire rim: the knife edge caused when metal squeezes between the die and the collar under extreme pressure.

Wire edge
An effect whereby a thin, wire-like section of the rim of a coin is raised above the rest of the rim along the outside.

Working Die
A die actually used to strike the coins. The dies are produced from the WORKING HUBS.

First to be struck were the "Wire Edge" pieces, without the raised rim traditionally on U.S. coins. Five hundred were made, with 46 raised stars on their edges-symbolizing the 46 states-along with one plain-edge satin proof.

coins, similar to 1856 Flying Eagle cents, Gobrecht dollars and Wire Edge Indian Head eagles. Because of their rarity, however, they are usually collected as type coins.

Knife edge - Synonym for wire edge.
Knife Rim - A result of the minting process when a piece of extruding metal on the rim of a coin caused by metal forced between the die and collar.

Edges - Most proofs will have either square edges, or wire edges in the case of some matte and Roman finish proofs. Business strikes usually do not have square or wire edges.

A "proof" coin is usually distinguished by sharpness of STRIKE, high wire edge and brilliant mirror-like surfaces - as a result of more than one blow from a DIE.

Today they are valued at $7,500 in Very Fine if the are the 'wire edge' type, $15,000 in Very Fine if they are the 'rolled edge' type without the period.
