After three years of postponements, innumerable revisions and committee conferences, the Mint Act of 1873 was finally passed on February 12, 1873.

Seated half dollars with arrows and rays were struck at two mints, Philadelphia and New Orleans (with the "O" mint mark below the eagle), and both had relatively high mintages.

So far as I know, there are only three 1853-O half dollars known of the Without Arrows type (not to be confused with 1853-O half dollars with arrows at date and rays on the reverse, minted later in the year, which are quite common).

The reverse, or back of the coin, depicts an image of an eagle with arrows and an olive branch at its feet. The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 allowed the use of silver for coins. In 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was thus minted.

He is often shown holding a bow with arrows symbolizing the sun's rays. As an archer he was also known as "Hecatebolos", the god of sudden death.

This legislation was soon implemented, and lightweight silver issues with arrows at the date to distinguish the difference, were placed into circulation. For the first time since 1849, silver pieces were again abundant.

A mystery to which recent attention has been drawn is the discovery of a raised dot appearing below the date 1853 on some half dimes of this date with arrows.

The 1853 is a highly desirable one-year type Seated Half Dollar with arrows at the date and rays on the reverse added to indicate a weight reduction from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams.

The 1853 coins were minted in two varieties: one with arrows at the date, and one without them.
