Air Labels

Air Labels: Air labels, or etiquettes, are standard-sized blue labels used by UPU member nations to denote airmail carriage. They are inscribed "Par Avion'' (French for "By Airmail'').

Airmail: The kind of mail that is airlifted.

Airmail - The carriage of mail by air. The first regular airmail service began in 1870 in Paris when mail was delivered by hot air balloons.

German air labels: pre-WW I, portraits of early German airmen and the royal family; privately printed for forces personnel to apply to their mail, which was post free.

Air labels are inscribed "Par Avion'' (French for "By Airplane''). The text usually includes the same message in the language of the native country. Adhesive air labels are also issued by private organizations for specific, unofficial flights.
