Austria's annexation of Bosnia in 1908 angered the Kingdom of Serbia. In 1914, a Bosnian Serb assassinated the heir to the thrones of Austria and Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, during a visit to Sarajevo.

Austria was regarded by some as a victim, by others as a supporter of Nazi aggression, but made the transition to independence quickly after the War. The AMG - Austria issues were printed only once in the U.S.

The first stamps issued specifically for postage on Christmas greeting cards appeared in Austria in December 1937.

The first is a contraction of centesimi, used in Austrian Italy; the second is a monetary unit of the governments of Italy and Uruguay, while the third is a monetary unit of France and its colonies, and of Belgium and Haiti.

The stamp on the right cost 5 Schillings to buy. It is from a country called Republic of Austria, but again you see they used their name in their own language. So, it is "Republik Osterreich".

A form of early security device used primarily by Austria. Diagonal lines or bars of lacquer were applied to sheets of stamps (on the face side) to make it difficult to fraudulently remove postal cancellations for illegal reuse.
