Cancellations and postmarks form a vast area often overlooked by beginners.

Pre-cancels
Stamps overprinted with a city and state before being used. These stamps were used by bulk mailers and required a special license from the Post Office.
The ideal cancel on the earliest US stamps is a clear handstamp that ties the stamp to its cover cleanly, unambiguously, and attractively. The two covers below - NOT with x- cancels - are the ultimate in this regard, apparently.
Canceled-to-order: "Stamps are ""canceled to order,'' usually in full sheets, by many governments. The cancels may be printed on the stamps at the same time that the stamp design is printed.
Cancelling Machines - machines that cancel stamps and postmark envelopes in a single operation. Many different makes and models of cancelling machines have been used by post offices.

Cancellation
Any form of stamp defacement applied to prevent revenue loss through illegal reuse of stamps. Although cancellations are most commonly encountered as ink obliterations, they also can be holes, cuts, tears or even laser burns.
precancel—To cancel postage stamps or stamped envelopes before mailing. If authorized, bulk mailers may precancel their own postage.
Precancel - Stamp with a special overprint cancellation allowing it to bypass normal canceling.
Prestige Booklet - A booklet of stamps issued by the postal authorities that commemorates some event or particular subject.
Fancy Cancel: A general term to describe any pictorial or otherwise unusual obliterating postmark.
CANCELLED TO ORDER - A postage stamp bearing a cancel (invariably neat), but never postally used. Provided as a service by some postal administrations. Stamps so cancelled are not always distinguishable from postally used.
Cancel - marks applied to stamps which prevent reuse. The marks often include a date, rate, route, or place of mailing.
cancellation A medium cancel covering more of the design than in Fine condition. Cancellation not necessarily legible.

Cancel: A marking intended to show a stamp has been used and is no longer valid as postage. Modern cancels usually include the name of the original mailing location or a nearby sorting facility and the date of mailing.
The cancellation at the highest point in the World took place on May 10, 1996 when a set of four stamps with the FDC on Himalayan Ecology were carried by team of Indo-Tibetian Border Police to Mount Everest.
Paquebot -- Cancellation indicating an item was mailed aboard a ship.
Par Avion -- French for "By Air."
Parcel Post Stamps -- Special stamps for payment of parcel post fees.
Facer canceler: postal equipment that "faces" the envelope to be read easily and then cancels the item.
Face value: the monetary value of a postage stamp as printed, or surcharged in its design.

[1] A handstamp or mark used across a postage stamp as an obliterator to render it invalid for further postal use. It may be a pen marking or even the removal of a small piece of the stamp.

This definition is a lulu … A picture postcard, a cancel, and a stamp presenting maximum concordance. The stamp is usually affixed to the picture side of the card and is tied by the cancel.

A designation of fine means a stamp without flaws, average centering, gum with light hinge marks. Used stamps designated "fine" are not quite as fresh, cancels are heavier and centering is good.
