Catalogs. Catalogs are very necessary to have for all stamp collectors. However, if you collect many countries or just one topic, it can be very expensive to buy them.

Catalogue Value: The value of a cover as listed in a given catalogue for the most common condition in which the cover is usually collected. Some catalogues list covers at a retail value.

Catalog Value. The value of a stamp given by a stamp catalog (i.e., Scott catalogue value, etc.). These valuations are not necessarily the prices at which the stamps can be purchased.

Catalogs
We have all the most popular stamps collectors catalogs for your collecting needs. Find out how much your stamp collection is worth - you will be sure to find all your stamps in one or more of our many stamp catalogs.

Catalog
A priced list of stamps, covers or other philatelic material. Although there are only a few dominant catalogs, many different types exist, each an important reference for stamp collectors.

Stamp Catalogues
Stamp catalogues are very useful for a stamp collector.

Durland Catalog
The Durland Catalog is published periodically by the United States Stamp Society (formerly the Bureau Issues Association), and lists all known plate numbers on U.S. stamps.

The catalog values represent a stamp in good condition with no faults. I will describe these terms later. If your stamp is not in good condition or contains faults, the stamp will obviously worth much less than catalog value.

Other catalogs exist for the most popular fields of precancels, such as Double-line Electros (DLEs), Bicent's, Black Harding's, etc.

These catalogues list stamps or covers by number, and if you are using pre-printed albums produced by the same companies, that number will probably be used as a reference there as well.

The Scott catalogues all have sort of a preface, or special notice, in the front, which is of vital importance to those using the book, yet all too few read the helpful hints and remember them.

A colourful catalogue of Indian stamps. The market values of the stamps is also provided. The catalogue covers Postal history, Indian Essays, Pre-independence and post independence issues.

Every stamp catalogue shows an estimated value for every stamp it lists. And, since values can change, they print new ones every year. So, you look in the catalogue and find that one stamp is valued at 35 cents, and the other is valued at 70 cents.

R: 1: Scott Catalog number prefix for U.S. Revenue 2: abbreviation for Reprint 3: Registration, Registered, Recommandé (Sp.) 4: precedes the European postal code on addresses in Romania, such as R-70119, Bucharest.

I find the Scott's catalog full of valuable information besides pricing. It teaches us to sort our stamps in an intelligent way. It gives us a way of identifying our stamps. We buy and trade stamps based on their Scott number.

With collections (let's say it's YOUR collection that you've decided to sell - aj.), very often there are several nice pieces or sections that can command a good sales price by themselves, if they are separated and catalogued and described.

Major varieties of stamps and "catalog values" are listed in stamp catalogs, which are available in most libraries.

Many libraries carry Scott's catalog in their reference section.
Shortcomings:
This is probably the best way to go if you want a precise market value of all of your stamps individually.

*Back-of-the Book - items listed in Scott Catalogue following Postage Stamps, which begin their Scott number with a letter prefix.

Type: A basic design of a stamp or a set. Catalogues use type numbers or letters to save space. Catalogues show a typical design of one type rather than every stamp with that design or a similar design.

Triptych -- A se-tenant strip of three related stamps, often forming one overall design. Type -- A basic design of a stamp or a set. Catalogs use type numbers or letters to save space.

The term "dipped" is not necessary in, say, a catalog description of a coin, unless the dipping has caused noticeable dulling of lustre, or an otherwise unnatural appearance (typically on copper coins).

The postal value expressed on a stamp, not to be confused with the value to a collector, based on stamp catalogue valuation.
First Day Cover
A cover bearing new stamps cancelled on the day of issue, normally with a special "First Day" postmark.

Facsimile - a likeness or imitation of a genuine stamp, marked in some way to denote its status so that it doesn't deceive a collector or defraud a postal administration. Catalog illustrations may be considered facsimiles.

These subclasses include circulars, printed matter, pamphlets, catalogs, newsletters, direct mail, and merchandise. Standard Mail may be sent at Enhanced Carrier Route, automation, nonautomation, and Not Flat-Machinable rates.
