Christmas Seals are labels placed on mail during the Christmas season to raise funds and awareness for charitable programs.They have become particularly associated with lung diseases such as tuberculosis, and with child welfare.

This time of year most people receive holiday mail brightened with a choice of secular and religious Christmas stamps. North America is the birthplace of the Christmas stamp.

Christmas Seals - privately produced, fund raising labels intended for use on mail during the Christmas season. First issued in 1907. Scott numbers are prefixed with WX.

Christmas Seal
A non-postal label, created by various charities and sold or distributed (for a requested donation) to people for use on outgoing holiday mail.

The first Commonwealth Country to issue a stamp specifically for postage on Christmas greetings cards was Australia in 1957. The first stamps issued specifically for postage on Christmas greeting cards appeared in Austria in December 1937.

The first US issue designated as setenant was a block of four Christmas (holly) stamps in 1964, though there are earlier issues that could be considered setenants.

Here we have a well-known guy, called Santa Claus in some countries, Father Christmas in some, and other names in several other countries. On the left, Santa trudges through the snow in Canada with goodies for boys and girls.

In the United States, holiday issues such as Contemporary Christmas, Traditional Christmas, Hanukkah and the like are considered special stamps.

Christmas Issue (1999 Rain deer - "a lick and stick" as she called it) didn't soak well; it literally turned to 'mush' - and it met none of the criteria above.

Special stamps are the extra stamps the post office prints each year. The Love stamps and the Christmas stamps are special stamps.

Charity seal - stamp-like label that is not a postage stamp and is distributed by a charity. They are often affixed to envelopes. Christmas seals are one example.

Don't forget to mention stamps, stamp albums, and hinges before your birthday or Christmas! Also remember that a great many inexpensive stamps in the past have turned into ore valuable stamps over the years.
